File Extension PPT
File extension PPT refers to Microsoft's PowerPoint, which is a program developed for the development and display of presentations. Forethought Inc. originally developed PowerPoint in 1984 for Macintosh computers. Forethought was acquired by Microsoft in 1987. It subsequently became Microsoft's graphics business unit. PowerPoint is part of Microsoft's Office Suite and can run on either Microsoft Windows or on the Mac OS.

The application is also used on the Linux operating system through the Wine compatibility layer. PowerPoint is one of the most popular and influential technologies used by students, business people, educators, trainers among others. Initially, Microsoft Office 2003 had its branding revised by Microsoft to stress the importance of PowerPoint and file extension PPT in the Office Suite. PowerPoint presentations and therefore PPT file extensions are made of a number of individual pages refereed to as slides. Slides can be used to form the basis of web casts. Presentations are further run and saved in one of the various file formats available for instance, in the 2003 default file extension PPT, PPS and POT, in PowerPoint 2007 and Mac OS X 2008 versions, XML based file formats, PPTX, PPSX, PPTM, POTM and many more. Users can also obtain the binary file format used in PowerPoint, as it is available from Microsoft. The PPT file extension can be freely downloaded and executed under Microsoft's Open Specification Promise Patent Licensing.
